His name was so revered that his influence reached throughout the archipelago, from Java, Madura, Lombok, Kalimantan, and even Maluku. Sunan Giri's real name was Raden Paku, born around 1442 AD. He was also known as Prabu Satmata, Sultan Abdul Fakih, and Joko Samudro. His father was Maulana Ishaq, a prominent Islamic scholar from Central Asia who preached in Blambangan, the easternmost region of Java. His mother was Dewi Sekardadu, daughter of the King of Blambangan. From this lineage, Sunan Giri was of royal blood and a descendant of Islamic scholars. According to popular legend, as a baby, Raden Paku was thrown into the sea due to the political conditions of the kingdom at the time. The baby was later found and raised by a merchant named Nyai Gede Pinatih in Gresik. This is where Sunan Giri's life journey began. As an adult, he studied religion with Sunan Ampel at the Ampel Denta Islamic boarding school in Surabaya. There, he met Raden Fatah, Sunan Bonang, and other future great Islamic figures.
