Kemaliye Village Ride to the Dark Canyon Road | Turkiye's Uncharted Roads

No music. No narration. Just the real sound of the road. Through the streets of Kemaliye and into one of the most remarkable pieces of road in the country. Kemaliye sits in the Euphrates valley in Erzincan province, eastern Turkey. The town was formerly called Egin and has been a trade hub since the Ottoman era, positioned at the crossroads of the ancient Silk Road. It is currently on the UNESCO tentative heritage list for its 600 years of preserved Ottoman-Anatolian architecture. Riding through the town before the canyon puts the scale of what follows into context. Then comes Karanlik Yol. The Stone Road. Construction began in 1870. It was completed in 2002. That is 132 years, built by the residents of Kemaliye using picks and shovels, because the local authorities refused to fund a road through terrain this difficult. The result: 38 unlit tunnels, totaling 4,722 meters carved entirely by hand into the canyon rock face, high above the Euphrates River. The elevation difference between the road and the river below reaches 1,000 meters at certain points. Karanlik Kanyon is considered one of the five deepest canyons in the world. There are no guardrails on most of the drops. There are no lights in the tunnels. Just the road a community carved out of a mountain, over a century, because they needed one. 47 minutes. Full POV.
