The D775 between Tosya and Kastamonu runs through the mountains instead of around them. 37 minutes of Black Sea forest roads: tight corners, forested ridges, the kind of surface that navigation apps quietly label as alternative route and hope you ignore. Kastamonu is at the other end. One of the most preserved Ottoman cities in northern Turkey, and the place where Ataturk chose to announce the hat reform in 1925 — a deliberate choice of location, in a city that had kept its own shape for centuries.
