Mars on Earth!? I Found a Coral Reef in the Desert! 🇹🇲 Hello everyone! Today, I'm taking you on a unique journey in Turkmenistan. We’re starting in Balkanabat, the second-largest city in the country and the capital of the Balkan Province. This city was originally named Nebit Dag, which means "Oil Mountain," reflecting its historical wealth in oil resources. Even today, Balkanabat remains a major hub for oil and natural gas production in Turkmenistan. During the Soviet era, this city was a military base and developed rapidly in industry. Today, Balkanabat is a blend of modernity and traditional culture. We’ll take a stroll through the city, stop by a supermarket, and talk with locals to experience the atmosphere and lifestyle of the people here. Next, we’ll head to Yangi Kala Canyon, an awe-inspiring canyon hidden in the desert. The road there is quite rugged, but the stunning views are worth it! Along the way, we’ll stop at a sacred cemetery that has been revered by Turkmen people since the 8th century. Inside, there are ancient graves and a sacred wooden hut where women come to pray for children. The ritual of praying for children at this sacred cemetery is a long-standing tradition passed down through generations among the locals in this area. They believe that spending a night in the hut at this holy site will help fulfill their wish to have children. When we reach Yangi Kala Canyon, I was truly amazed by the grandeur and beauty of nature here. The colors and shapes of the rocks are so unusual, it feels like we’ve landed on some otherworldly planet in a distant galaxy. Even more fascinating, this area used to be the bottom of an ancient sea! We’ll get to see fossils and coral remains from 50-65 million years ago, a testament to the long history of our planet.
