Make A Wooden Dinner Plate | Handmade Wooden Plate | DIY Woodworking

I made a set of dinner plates from wood and patterned plywood (at least tried to). These wooden dinner plates are handmade at the Woodgeek workshop. Whenever I attempt to make something new on the lathe, I never get it right on the first attempt. I usually make a few mistakes before I finally get it right. So, this time while making these wooden dinner plates, I want to show you not just the final dinner plate which came out nice, but also all my failed attempts before I finally made a decent looking wooden plate. For my first attempt, I took two 12 inch x12 inch pieces of 3/4th inch plywood and glued them horizontally to create a blank. I mounted the plywood blank on my lathe and turned it into a 9 inch plate. I used regular commercial plywood and the final plate looked ugly with the exposed inner layers of the plywood. But I wasn't ready to give up just yet. For my next attempt, I cut out 1-inch pieces of the plywood and glued them together with the edge grain facing up. This created a turning blank with a pretty cool plywood pattern. But unfortunately, I didn't get enough glue into one of the strips and the plate broke as I was turning it on the lathe. The third time, I decided to use a solid wooden blank made from black sirish, which is a strong hardwood available around here. I added a 1/2 inch strip of birch in the middle for a decorative effect and glued two pieces of black sirish to create my new turning blank. This wooden plate turned out perfect! The dark wooden colour of the black sirish and the contrasting strip of birch in the middle make it pretty striking. I went ahead and made a few more wooden plates, one from birch with a strip of mahogany in the middle and my personal favourite, a striking diamond-shaped patterned plywood plate.
