Welcome to Belmonte, one of Portugal's most fascinating Historic Villages, and the birthplace of the hero of the Discoveries: Pedro Álvares Cabral! At the Museum of Discoveries, we learn about the history of the expedition to Brazil in 1500 and how the arrival of the Portuguese forever changed world cuisine (without potatoes, tomatoes, or cocoa, there wasn't much of what we ate!). Then we take a look at the Belmonte Olive Oil Museum, in its old olive oil mill. A journey into the world of the "liquid gold" of Beiras. Did you know that olive oil was introduced by the Phoenicians? And of course, an olive oil tasting! 😋 After a look at Rosallete Meirelles' murals, we'll explore The Secret Jewish Community: Belmonte was the only place in Europe where the Jewish community resisted uninterruptedly for centuries, living in the shadows during the Inquisition. An incredible story of resilience and faith. After lunch at the excellent Cabralina, on Largo Zeca Afonso, in the heart of Belmonte's historic center, we'll visit Our Lady of Hope, who traveled with Pedro Álvares Cabral to Brazil and was never allowed to leave Belmonte again, not even for the inauguration of Brasília! And who perhaps even guaranteed Portugal's independence by protecting King Sebastian! Before we even leave Belmonte, we'll visit the castle, the birthplace of sea heroes, and the incredible views of Cova da Beira. We'll end our fantastic tour at the Torre de Centum Cellas, the mysterious Roman tower that was the luxurious residence of a millionaire tin businessman in the 1st century AD.
