Centum Cellas: A Ruína Mais Misteriosa de Portugal - Parte I: O Espaço, o Tempo e o Monumento

In the municipality of Belmonte, in inland Portugal, stands one of the greatest mysteries of Portuguese archaeology: the enigmatic tower of Centum Cellas, a truly unique building constructed from blocks of granite cut with enormous precision, many of them with unusual shapes, which still defy any consensus explanation. In this first part, we explore the geographical location, historical context and provide a detailed architectural description of this unique monument. We start with the prehistory of the indigenous communities, moving on to the ancient exploitation of gold and tin, and finally to the consolidation of the territory under Roman rule. We analyse the role of Roman roads, the economic importance of the region, and the impact of Romanisation on the lives of the local populations. Next, we enter the Centum Cellas complex itself, exploring: – Its intriguing proportions – The ashlars with multiple right angles – The spans, friezes, corbels, and beam sockets – The mortarless construction technique – The annexed structures that have since been destroyed – Possible archaeoastronomical alignments – And the absence of direct parallels in the rest of the Roman Empire This video is based on the most relevant archaeological research and raises new questions about the origin of the construction technique used. Centum Cellas is an enigma that has yet to be definitively solved, and here we begin to follow all the clues and ask all the key questions. This is Part I of an in-depth investigation that will continue in Part II, to be published shortly.
