I finally got around to replicating a frame from My Neighbor Totoro and it was such a good time :) Here are the materials I used for this painting: Acrylic gouache: Titanium white, black, ultramarine, primary cyan, true red, primary magenta, primary yellow Opus Watercolour brush: size 8 and 10 Windsor Newton Series 7 size 6 Watercolour paper, cold press For this "replicant" or "master copy" I wet the entire page and worked wet-on-wet for the background foliage. When it dried I painted with a thicker mix of the gouache to crate more opaque, defined elements. I loved this technique! It's so relaxed and forgiving. This was the technique used by the concept artists and background painters. The whole movie has such a natural and gorgeous feel... a love letter to nature. Art director Kazuo Oga worked closely with Miyazaki to scout locations and get the overall atmosphere just right.
