HAUNTING, FUNNY 1700s Grave Portraits BLEW ME AWAY

SOUTH BURYING PLACE in Concord, MA was founded in 1635. It's 1/2 an acre that paints a picture of the first recognizable art form in 17th & 18th century America: TOMBSTONE CARVING! This Cemetery is Jammed with 309 intricately carved slate tombstones that give serious Edward GOREY and TIM BURTON vibes. Carved by the apprentices and followers of The Great Stonecutter of Boston (winged skulls, anyone?) these GRAVE PORTRAITS are FUNNY, CHARMING, jarring and sometimes TERRIFYING and OMINOUS! These headstone carvings are often LITERAL PORTRAITS and always works of art Infused with care and meaning, swirling with shapes and images and beautiful carved text. South Burying Place is historically meaningful, too- 13 Revolutionary War Veterans are interred here, having fallen in the nearby 1775 battles. Come with us as we examine all the face carvings and artistry we can find in this charming, historic New England Cemetery! Also: GRAVESTONE TYPOS!
