Finding EDWARD GOREY'S TOWER Hidden in a Cemetery!

When Edward Gorey enrolled in Harvard in 1946, he began making frequent pilgrimages to Mount Auburn Cemetery, a short bike ride from Harvard Yard. The cemetery’s quiet serenity and Victorian beauty were an inspiration to him. He walked here, read, wrote and drew, returning often. Elements of this place began to be woven into the settings of his work. Edward even stole a tombstone from the graveyard and carried it back to his dorm room. Ostensibly on his bicycle? That detail is lost to history. Dedicated in 1831 and set with classical monuments in a beautifully landscaped terrain, Mount Auburn was a transition from the Colonial-era harsh view of death and the afterlife embodied by old graveyards and Church burying grounds. Mount Auburn also differed from previous cemeteries in that it was open to the public and not restricted to specific religious groups. In the 1840s, Mount Auburn became one of the most popular tourist destinations in America, rivaling Niagara Falls and Mount Vernon. 60,000 people visited the cemetery in 1848 alone, including a 16 year old Emily Dickinson. When you visit now, it’s hard to imagine the place packed with 19th century tourists! But, you can definitely see the appeal it held for both them and for young Edward Gorey. So come with us and explore Mount Auburn Cemetery, searching for Edward Gorey and the tower which I believe inspired a central location in his story THE OBJECT LESSON. I’ve never heard that said before, so when we get to the tower, please tell me what you think in the comments!
