Akibasan Maru ("P-buoy") shipwreck at Kwajalein Atoll

Kwajalein Atoll has numerous WWII ship and plane wrecks. This video shows one of the large Japanese freighters sunk in the lagoon, the Akibasan Maru, locally called P-buoy for the navigational buoy that used to mark the wreck. The Akibasan Maru is a 375 foot long 4607-ton freighter sunk upright on 31 January 1944 on approximately a 160-foot bottom. Its upright position, good condition and relative nearness to the harbor make it one of the most popular shipwreck dives at Kwaj. At least at the time these video clips were shot, the wreck was still in pretty good shape although as with the other wrecks, most of the brass and other artifacts had been salvaged The video clips are all from dives made in the early 2000s and earlier using Hi8 or standard definition DV cameras. I apparently did not get back on the wreck after I started shooting high definition in 2008. I ran all the clips through Topaz VideoAI to upscale them. For a scene-by-scene description, see https://www.underwaterkwaj.com/video/.... Most of the video just shows scenes from swimming about the wreck and do not warrant much comment. Where I think something needs explaining, I’ll try to do so, but since my last dive there was 18 years ago, I probably won’t remember exactly where I was when I took a particular video clip. The numbers at the left of the page in the description file show time counter readings. To see the counter in the playing video, you may have to move the cursor to the lower margin of the screen.
