Airing Erris 3 (part 2)

Part 2 of "Airing Erris 3" features Willie Corduff of Rossport, Co. Mayo, - a farmer who objected to Shell's attempts to run a pipeline for unrefined gas through his land. In 2005, for their refusal to back down to the oil major, Corduff and four others -- known as the Rossport Five -- spent 94 days in jail. In 2007 Corduff was awarded the Goldman Environmental Prize, the world's largest prize honouring grassroots environmentalists. Willie was attacked one night as he campaigned at the Shell facility in Mayo. He says it was nearly "impossible" to go to the Garda station in Belmullet because they were in "party to the attack" on him that day. Also speaking is former Garda Sergeant Bernard "Benny" McCabe has worked as a human rights observer. Having experienced Garda activity on the Corrib Gas project firsthand when sent by Afri to monitor events, he filed a complaint with the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission. "I have worked as a human rights observer with the UN, the EU and the OSCE in Cambodia, the Balkans, South Africa and in many post-conflict situations," he later said, "but I have never been treated the way I was in Glengad."
