Nigg Level Crossing, Highland

Date filmed: Thursday the 11th of July 2024 Video filmed at 11:23 Route: Far North Line Fearn (FRN) is the closest station Crossing type: Automatic Half Barrier Crossing (AHBC) Filming location: B9175, Nigg Station (IV19 1QH) A level crossing located just south of Tain in the small settlement of Nigg Station, Ross and Cromarty, which takes its name from the former station which served the area until its closure in 1960. The level crossing here seems reasonably modern, and is the country's most northerly level crossing that isn't 'locally monitored' in any way, with its operation being tracked in a signal box or signalling centre rather than trackside for drivers. One alarm seemed fairly new at the time of filming, and in this video, you can see the same train on the very same run I saw up at Acheilidh Level Crossing. I arrived a good while before it did as the Far North Line takes a very long loop via Lairg to get between Tain and Golspie, so this wasn't even a race. Unfortunately due to time constraints and general lack of trains in the area (even fewer than normal (no) thanks to ScotRail's emergency timetable - the next train wasn't for another four hours), this is the last video you'll see from the Far North Line from me for now. Out of this crossing and the other I had yet to visit (Delny), this level crossing was the one I chose to visit at the time, on my way out of the Far North. Delny will be there to stay as plans to close it and replace it with a bridge were denied and called off fairly recently, leaving it open to a visit if I ever return to the area. That's hopefully not off the cards despite the vast distance given how much I loved this part of Scotland - The Far North!
