The One Jig Every Woodturner Needs (So I Built My Own)
Every woodturner eventually hits a wall when turning long, thin spindles or hollow forms: frustrating lathe vibration. In this video, I’m building the one jig every woodturner needs to solve that problem forever—a custom DIY lathe steady rest. I wanted a steady rest that was rock-solid but highly adjustable, so I designed a hybrid build. The main ring is constructed from sturdy layered plywood, featuring smooth-rolling wheels attached to integrated lengths of red aluminum T-track. To make adjustments completely tool-free, I finished it off using custom 3D printed knobs and locking catches. Whether you turn big bowls or delicate hollow vessels, a reliable steady rest changes everything. 🛠️ Materials & Components Used: • Ring: Layered Plywood • Adjustment Arms: Aluminum T-Track from Ali-Express • Hardware: 3D Printed Knobs & Catches and M6 Nuts/Bolts • Wheels: Skate Wheels https://a.co/d/02kl0dlS Bearings https://a.co/d/090HNfFo Bolts https://a.co/d/02kl0dlS ⏱️ Chapters: 0:00 - Introduction & Project Overview 0:20 - How a Lathe Steady Rest Works 1:02 - Calculating Measurements & Lathe Capacity 2:20 - Drawing & Laying Out the Design 3:38 - Cutting & Laminating the Plywood Ring 5:37 - Shaping the Base Plate 6:52 - Aligning the Base & Mounting System 7:50 - Creating the Walnut Runner for the Lathe Ways 9:04 - Laying Out the T-Track Adjustment Arms 10:08 - Gluing & Securing the Base Assembly 11:42 - Installing the T-Track Guides 15:29 - Changing the Inline Skate Wheel Bearings 18:14 - Installing the 3D Printed Bed Catches 19:50 - Assembling the 3D Printed Clamping Knobs 21:17 - Machining the Hardware & Rails 22:47 - Mounting the Wheels to the T-Track Arms 23:24 - Final Assembly & Demonstration 24:23 - Wrap Up & Thank You ⚙️ ABOUT THE IDEA GARAGE: The Idea Garage focuses on woodworking, garage workshop setup, DIY storage builds, tool upgrades, 3D-printed shop solutions, and practical home improvements.
