Así desaparece el pasado de Chile
Chile's past doesn't simply disappear with the passage of time. It's also lost when we destroy archaeological sites, loot cemeteries, remove artifacts from the country, or decide that some stories don't deserve to be told. In this episode, we talk with archaeologists Marcela Sepúlveda and Benjamín Ballester about the value of archaeological finds, the trafficking of pre-Columbian artifacts, the lack of oversight, and the conflict between heritage and development. Do archaeologists really hinder progress? Who decides which parts of the past are preserved? Why is Chile's history usually told from Santiago's perspective? And how much of our past has already been destroyed, sold, or left out of the official narrative? Marcela Sepúlveda holds a PhD in Prehistory, Ethnology, and Anthropology, and is President of the Chilean Society of Archaeology. Benjamín Ballester is an archaeologist with a PhD in Archaeology. In this episode, we discuss: — The looting of pre-Columbian cemeteries. — The theft and trafficking of archaeological artifacts. — Private collections and Chilean artifacts abroad. — The lack of oversight and protection of heritage. — Archaeologists as scapegoats for development. — Who decides how Chile's history is told? — Santiago's centralism in the construction of the past. — The Indiana Jones stereotype and real archaeology. — The diverse histories of Chilean archaeology. 📚 Learn about the book mentioned in the episode: https://ediciones.uahurtado.cl/produc... ⚡ Learn about Nano Life, sponsor of this episode: https://www.nanolife.cl/ Subscribe to La Forma del Patrimonio to learn more stories about heritage, architecture, archaeology, and urban history.
