Shortly before 5 p.m., the fire departments from Ettlingen and Waldbronn were alerted to a roof fire. The fire had broken out in a building slated for demolition. Because several gas cylinders were also affected by the fire, there was a temporary risk of explosion. Police and firefighters therefore evacuated residents and employees from the surrounding industrial and commercial area. Under the command of Ettlingen Fire Chief Luca Arsic, approximately 120 firefighters from all Ettlingen departments, as well as from the neighboring municipalities of Waldbronn and Malsch, were deployed at times. "We were able to quickly extinguish the fire using the turntable ladder and multiple hose lines. However, finding a total of four gas cylinders inside the burning building presented us with a particular challenge," reported Arsic. The crews established a high-capacity water supply from the nearby Alb River and via hydrants and cooled the gas cylinders. While three of these cylinders were located inside the building, another was on the roof. Structural engineers and chemical experts supported the incident command. "After a particularly dangerous cylinder shifted position during the firefighting operations, we had to react quickly to protect the surrounding area," explained Arsic. Together with Mayor Dr. Moritz Heidecker and Deputy District Fire Chief Dominik Wolf, a 200-meter safety radius was established, and the area was completely evacuated. Police assisted with the evacuation and the closure of the adjacent state road. The Albtal section of the AVG railway line was also temporarily closed. Emergency medical services and volunteers cared for the evacuees. A total of 39 emergency personnel with 14 vehicles were deployed under the command of the emergency medical services coordinator, Yannick Bengert. The psychosocial emergency service was also on site. "We arranged for the evacuees to be accommodated at a local hotel," explained Mayor Heidecker. A special excavator from the THW (Federal Agency for Technical Relief) was used to recover the gas cylinder lying on the roof. The remaining gas cylinders could stay inside the building. "The water level in the building was so high that the cylinders were completely submerged," explained Arsic. This avoided a complex and dangerous recovery operation. The all-clear was given at 11 p.m., and the road closures were lifted at that time. The reconnaissance vehicle from the Bretten CBRN unit was used to take measurements of hazardous materials. The measurements showed no danger to the public. Residents had previously been warned via the NINA warning app about both the risk of explosion and potential smoke exposure. A drone from the Kronau fire department continuously provided images to assess the situation. The incident command was supported by the command group of the Malsch fire department. Since all Ettlingen fire department personnel were committed, the northern fire protection unit of the Karlsruhe district was deployed to Ettlingen to ensure fire safety.
