The Escape and Brutal End of the Butcher of Lyon: Klaus Barbie | Documentary

After the war, Klaus Barbie managed to leave Europe via clandestine routes known as "ratlines," with the help of members of the clergy, the Red Cross, and Western intelligence services. In 1951, he arrived in Bolivia under a false identity: Klaus Altmann. There, he quickly integrated himself into military and political circles, offering his expertise as a former intelligence agent to combat insurgent movements. His role was key in the repression of opponents and in the campaign against Che Guevara. During the 1960s and 70s, he founded the Bolivian shipping company Transmarítima Boliviana, which operated as a front for arms trafficking and covert activities. He maintained relationships with high-ranking military officers, businessmen, and other German fugitives, taking advantage of the authoritarian context to ensure his protection. He participated in the 1980 coup and maintained ties with drug trafficking networks, operating from the shadows as a strategic advisor. Thanks to pressure from activists like Beate and Serge Klarsfeld and the return of democracy to Bolivia, he was finally arrested in 1983 and extradited to France. In 1987, after a landmark trial for crimes against humanity, he was sentenced to life imprisonment. He died in prison in 1991.
