1860s Summer Dresses for 3 and 5 Year Old Sisters || Dressing the 19th Century Child

We made underwear last month so now we get to dress them! I had options for Mary and Ella’s clothes. We know in 1862 their father sent them India silk fabric for dresses and their grandfather gave them a gingham and a muslin… one of those was blue and the other pink. So I found some pink “muslin”-it’s a cotton organdy which is a stiffer than period muslin but still has the same fine and sheer quality and is great for a summer dress! We also do have fabric to make blue gingham dresses for them next year and eventually we can make them winter silk dresses to represent the fabric their father sent them. But before new dresses, they’ll need stockings, shoes, hats, and styled hair.
