Making an 1880s Late Bustle Skirt || Dressing the 19th Century Woman

I was invited to a last minute (for us) 1880s event and I decided that it was simply too hot to wear my fully lined upholstery weight twill cotton dress and my silk dress was too fancy. I already had a “polonaise” basque type bodice that would work well once bustled and I had just enough of the fabric left over to eek out a skirt to match. Now I have a fully unlined, light cotton dress to wear for summer 1880s excursions. Although I technically used a pattern, I did widen the skirt by about 15-20” to make it more inline with the later part of the 1880s (the original pattern was more of a natural form style skirt) and I completely threw out the directions and instead chose to copy the construction of an original garment that I own from the mid 1880s.
