Rui Barbosa

It is said that in 1907, during the Second Peace Conference in The Hague, Netherlands, one of the speakers was called upon to give his speech. Then, a small man, barely over five feet tall, with a large head and already of a certain age, passed through the large doors of the immense hall. The scene was so ironic that someone in the audience joked: "What a large door for such a small man!" At the end of the speech, when the little man left through the same door, the same person commented: "What a small door for such a large man!" This man who entered small and left large was Rui Barbosa, a Brazilian jurist, diplomat, writer, philologist, journalist, and politician. His performance at the Hague conference was the pinnacle of the career of this important figure in Brazilian history and was so remarkable that it earned him the nickname "Eagle of The Hague."
