The epicenter was Tiananmen, the central square of Beijing, where about 1 million people gathered. The protesters pinned their hopes, among other things, on the leader of the USSR, Mikhail Gorbachev, who was visiting the Chinese capital for the first time with an official visit at the time. However, on the night of June 4, the Chinese authorities, led by Deng Xiaoping, ordered the dispersal of the protest using armored vehicles, resulting in numerous human casualties. Why did the Chinese take to the Square, what consequences did it have, and how are those events interpreted in modern China today - we discuss in the video.
