⁴ᴷ⁶⁰ Metro Tour: Inside the Last Original Soviet Metro Trains in the EU in Sofia, Bulgaria!

Come with us for a ride on the LAST umodernized Soviet metro trains still operating in the European Union. In Sofia, Bulgaria, a few classic 81-717 and 81-714 metro cars from 1989 continue to run in daily passenger service, making the Sofia Metro one of the only places in Europe where you can still experience this authentic original Cold War era rolling stock. These Soviet built trains were manufactured by Metrovagonmash in Russia during the final years of the USSR. Today only four unmodernized trainsets remain. They retain their original traction motors, mechanical control systems, interiors, door hardware, and the powerful sound that defined metro travel across the Eastern Bloc. Nowadays, only seen in Ukraine, Russia, and Uzbekistan in their original configuration, nearly every other city has modernized or withdrawn this model. Warsaw retired its last sets in 2023 and Budapest rebuilt theirs, which makes Sofia the last system in the European Union with original trains in normal daily service. For transit fans and railway enthusiasts, this is a unique opportunity to experience living history. Thank you for watching.
