Context In 2016, former President Ricardo Lagos participated in an exclusive interview with Tomás Mosciatti, where he criticized the Bachelet administration for the implementation of the Tax Reform and the Transantiago public transportation system. Lagos attempted to build a candidacy focusing more on the political parties than on the electorate that would eventually vote for him. By announcing his candidacy at the end of 2016, when the Bachelet administration had been in power for over a year without gaining political control of the country, Lagos sought to fill a clear political vacuum within the New Majority coalition. However, his decision ignored the obvious fact that people were not yet thinking about the next presidential election. Aware of his unpopularity, Lagos made every effort to improve his standing in the opinion polls, but his message of concrete proposals failed to resonate with an electorate that was paying little attention to the process and seemed more interested in seeing new faces than in hearing proposals.
