In a good way, it is necessary to make new screws and nuts, as their mutual wear is going on. Thread wear is shown under a microscope. The counter nuts of these screws are not as complicated as the tailstock lead screw nut of this machine. By the way, each screw has two nuts. They are pressed. These nuts are simply shafts with M6 side threaded holes for the lead screws. Making your own rollers is not a problem. The problem is that the threaded hole must be precisely positioned relative to the roller. It is necessary that the axis of the threaded hole be perpendicular to the axis of the roller and intersect it, and not intersect with it. And the second. Press these nuts very precisely into the housing so that the axes of the threaded holes of each nut coincide with the axis of the lead screw. This is especially important since the thread is long. Therefore, even a slight distortion is not allowed. Thus, it turns out that it is almost impossible to make nuts and, most importantly, to press them correctly. Most likely, during the manufacture of the machine, these threaded sockets were made after the nuts were pressed in, in place. Therefore, in order to reduce the axial play of the screw due to the wear of the threaded pair, it is easier to make a new lead screw with a fuller thread. Since the wear in the nut is not eliminated and the thread profile of the nut remains distorted, making only one lead screw, without the nut, is of course a compromise. So I did in the tailstock of this machine. And I have both a die and a tap. But in order to cut the thread in the nut in place, special, long taps are needed. I don't have those. And, secondly, with an increase in the diameter of the thread and maintaining the outer diameter of the shoulder, the working area of ​​​​the shoulder, which perceives axial forces, will decrease. And an increase in the outer diameter of the shoulder requires the refinement of the machine caliper. Therefore, the easiest way to reduce the end play of both caliper leadscrews is to make new leadscrews with fuller threads, although this is a compromise. The manufacturing problem is that the screws are thin and long: M6 thread and 170 mm long. The manufacture of screws is shown in detail in two ways: with with and without a steady rest, in a collet. I reduced the non-perpendicularity of the end of the tailstock quill to the axis of rotation of the part on this machine from 0.03 mm to 0.01 mm. How I did it is shown in the video “Lathe MN-80.
