I Trained 24 Hours a Week in Cape Town - Here’s the Honest Truth
📍 Training for Triathlon in Cape Town - My Honest Guide I’ve just spent 3 weeks training in Cape Town, averaging ~24 hours per week across swim, bike, and run. Cape Town is often talked about as an endurance training dream — but what’s it actually like if you’re here to train properly? In this video, I break down: -Where to swim, bike, and run What works (and what doesn’t) Safety, weather, and season considerations This is my honest, experience-based guide. 🏊 Swimming in Cape Town Pool training is the most reliable option Sports Science Institute offers elite facilities Virgin Active gyms have excellent 25m pools Open-water swimming on the Atlantic side is very cold and requires serious acclimatisation For warmer, calmer open water: consider trips north to Langebaan Lagoon or selected south coast swims 🚴 Cycling Routes Cycling is where Cape Town really shines. The classic route: Sea Point → Camps Bay → Hout Bay → Chapman’s Peak Drive (All my routes are on my strava - Matt Kaminer (but ride with others!)) Incredible variety: flats, rollers, long climbs Wind is a major factor - tough, but a powerful training stimulus Best ridden early (5–6am) and ideally in a group Stick to well-travelled routes unless riding with experienced locals 🏃 Running Routes Sea Point Promenade is perfect for long runs and quality sessions Flat, paved, and popular with runners Trail options around Table Mountain offer incredible views and strength stimulus Trail running is best done with experienced runners who know the area well ☕ Food, Coffee & Community One of Cape Town’s biggest advantages as a training base is life outside the sessions. Incredible food scene - easy to fuel well World-class coffee culture Strong endurance community with regular group rides and runs Training feels social, supportive, and sustainable 📍 Cape Town vs Stellenbosch If you’re looking for pure, quiet, no-distraction training, many elite athletes base themselves in Stellenbosch If you want high-quality training plus lifestyle, food, coffee, and community, Cape Town offers a more complete experience If you’re thinking about coming to Cape Town to train and have questions I didn’t cover, drop them in the comments - happy to help. 👉 Subscribe for more endurance training, behind-the-scenes race prep, and training base guides. 00:00 Intro – Is Cape Town really the endurance training dream? 01:06 Swim training in cape town 02:18 Cycling in Cape Town – iconic routes & brutal wind (Sea Point → Camps Bay → Hout Bay → Chapman’s Peak explained_ 03:47 Running in Cape Town - road vs trail 04:36 Weather, seasons & planning sessions 05:12 Community / atmosphere 05:44 Cape Town vs Stellenbosch – which is right for you? 06:33 Affordability 07:03 Safety 07:22 Outro + questions & subscribe
