Refugees Flock into Reopened Railway Station in Budapest

Refugees flocked into the Eastern (Keleti) Railway Station in the Hungarian capital Budapest on Thursday, after the withdrawal of police who had blocked them for two days. Many of the roughly 1,000 refugees camping by the station climbed aboard trains after the station reopened at 08:00, hoping to reach Western European countries such as Germany. Loudspeakers repeated a message in both Hungarian and English that no trains would be crossing into Western Europe, but many people failed to get the message due to the chaos. The Hungarian government blocked the railway station on Monday, forbidding refugees without valid visas to enter. The station said international trains heading to Western Europe have been indefinitely canceled for safety concerns. "The people, they don't have hope. They just want to go to another country from here, because they don't have a safe life. The police don't control us. We live on the street. We are not like a human being. Look at the people, they look like animals," said a Syrian refugee. "There is no ticket. The people go free without a ticket. How will they go to Germany without a ticket? It's impossible. They are taking us to a camp. For that, we are here. We don't want to go to a camp. There is no life in Hungary. There are no people here. There is no life.
