"Morning Glow" Oil Painting Demo by Martin Figlinski

In this episode of Painted Florida, I paint “Morning Glow,” a quiet Florida marsh scene filled with soft early morning light and atmosphere. The focus of this painting is the subtle glow of the rising sun filtering through and behind the clouds, creating delicate shifts of color and value across the sky and water. As I work through the painting, I talk about simplifying shapes, controlling edges, and capturing the feeling of a peaceful Florida morning rather than getting caught up in unnecessary detail. You'll also see how I use a palette knife to create soft, broken textures and interesting effects in the cloud formations, adding variety and life to the sky. This painting was also an experiment in my studio process. For the entire piece, I worked without any paint thinner or solvent. Instead, I used safflower oil both as my painting medium and for cleaning my brushes during the session. The results were excellent, producing smooth paint handling, soft transitions, and a cleaner, simpler painting experience. Whether you're an oil painter looking for new techniques or simply enjoy beautiful Florida landscapes, I hope this demonstration encourages you to slow down, experiment, and enjoy the process of painting.
