A Brief History of Nature Study - RCA Reflection Talk

From the late 1800s to the early 1900s a major educational reform took place regarding how children should be taught. Called the Nature Study Movement, its purpose was to teach science using the outside environment. It was believed that this would foster a love for nature while developing a sense of responsible citizenship. Nature Study today means different things to different people - from being self-taught to enjoying a guided nature walk. Speaker Paul Knitted holds an M.Ed degree from Syracuse University and an MS degree in Environmental Science from SUNY-ESF. During his varied career, he has held the roles of elementary school teacher, nature columnist, Public Information Officer at the Environmental Protection Agency, Manager of the Northeastern Region for the American Forest Council, and Program Director at Baltimore Woods Nature Center. He currently serves as an adjunct college biology instructor and a Rice Creek Associates board member, assisting with Facebook postings. This talk is a Rice Creek Reflection sponsored by Rice Creek Associates (RCA), the friend group of Rice Creek Field Station. Rice Creek Field Station is part of the State University of New York at Oswego, and is located at 193 Thompson Road in Oswego, NY.
