How to Make a Simple Collar Weld (Forge Welding Techniques)

Calculating Material Needed for Collars (Excerpt from Lorelei Sims' "The Backyard Blacksmith" page 101) (Thickness of material to be joined x 4) + (Height of material to be joined x 2) + (Thickness of collar material x 2) Example: Let's say you have two scrolls that you want to join with a collar that is 1/8th inch (0.3cm) thick. The scrolls are made from 1/2 inch (1cm) square stock. (1/2 x 4) + (1/2 x 2) + (1/8 x 2) = 4/2 + 1 + 2/8= 2 + 1 + 1/4 = 3 1/4" Your collar length should be 3 1/4 inches (8.3cm) COMMENT: Have you tried forge welding collars?
