No one survived! In one of the strangest aviation accidents. Sit down, because here comes the story! Part of the crew and about half of the passengers were Saudi citizens, while 85 passengers were from Pakistan and 32 from Iran. Most of these passengers were going to Jeddah to participate in the Hajj, because Jeddah is the main international gateway for travelers to Mecca. The Hajj is a religious obligation that says all Muslims must visit the holy city of Mecca at least once in their lives, if they are able. The total experience on the L-1011 (Saudia Flight 163) of the three flight crew members was only 670 hours, and all three were below-average pilots, according to their training records. Thus began the recipe for disaster. The 1970s were not easy for aviation... the first link in this accident was set. At 9:08 PM on August 19, 1980, Saudia Flight 163 took off from Riyadh and began climbing toward cruising altitude. The pilot began whistling and singing, a habit that would resurface repeatedly during the flight. It didn't take long for things to start going wrong. 7 minutes after takeoff, one of the two fire alarms in the C-3 rear cargo compartment went off, alerting the flight engineer to the presence of a fire. But since the fire was detected only by the B system, the captain seemed to believe that activating just one smoke alarm was insufficient to divert the flight. The second link in this accident was closing. Only five and a half minutes after detecting smoke, the pilots decided to return to the airport. Do you know what's worse? This wasn't considered excessive at the time, although it is today. Another link was closing. Now press play and learn more about this sequence of errors on Saudia Flight 163, which resulted in the third deadliest plane crash of all time. ✅ Did you like this video? - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - THANK YOU FOR WATCHING LITO SOUSA IN ANOTHER VIDEO FROM PLANES AND MUSIC Lito Sousa has been a mechanic for a major airline for over 35 years and is now a licensed pilot working with commercial aircraft since 1986.
