A Step into the Living Museum - Jewellery of the Hrusso Aka Tribe
Stunning, simply chic—these are some of the adjectives we use to describe the breathtaking jewellery of the Hrusso Aka tribe of Arunachal Pradesh. But in truth, it is so much more than mere adornment. To step into their world is to step into a living museum, an experience that leaves one entirely awestruck. As travel curators, we have witnessed countless traditions across the globe, yet watching these elegant Hrusso ladies dress in their traditional attire left us entirely speechless. There is a profound grace and an undeniable beauty in the way their garments and accessories are worn, each piece a testament to a heritage that breathes life into the modern day.For the Hrusso Aka, the body is a canvas where identity, clan, and memory are painted in silver, stone, and jade. The women drape themselves in long, dark-red garments that flow with a quiet dignity, their faces sometimes bearing the subtle, straight-line tattoos from forehead to chin—a mark of their enduring identity. The yellow stones that form these magnificent pieces were originally collected from the mountain riverbeds that carve through their ancestral lands. To wear a tradzy is to wear the landscape itself. Historically valued at the price of two mithun (the revered domestic gayal of the region), these necklaces are symbols of immense wealth, status, and deep-rooted cultural pride. Each stone, smoothed by the rushing waters of the Kameng rivers, holds the whispers of ancestors and the stories of trade routes long forgotten. The Enduring Legacy: As we stand in the presence of the Hrusso Aka people, we are reminded that their jewellery does not just adorn the body—it speaks. It tells of the Nyezi-No—the Sky and the Earth—which they revere. It speaks of the Nechido festival, where community and nature intertwine in celebration. For those of us at Curtain Call Adventures, encountering the Hrusso Aka is a profound privilege. It is a reminder that true luxury lies not in mass-produced perfection, but in the heavy, history-laden stones of a tradzy necklace, and in the quiet grace of a people who carry their ancestors' stories around their necks. The Hrusso (or Aka) are a small indigenous tribe in Arunachal Pradesh, India, primarily inhabiting the West Kameng and East Kameng districts. Known as "painted" by their Assamese neighbors, they have a distinct culture marked by unique customs, traditional face tattoos, and a history of resistance against British colonial expansion. Created in collaboration with The Unknown Planet and with support from local communities.
