Film 1st Place, Stevenson Diengdoh: Roots to Bridges
Roots to Bridges by Stevenson Diengdoh - 1st Place Winner (Film Category) Stevenson Diengdoh has been trying to enter this competition since last year, but unavoidable circumstances prevented him from finishing on time. He chose this competition as a platform for promoting sustainable tourism and creating a new picture of rural sustainability that can generate employment for locals, boost village economies, and create awareness that working for others and creating something new can lead to meaningful impact and unique experiences. His winning film documents the living root bridges of Meghalaya, which are already a sustainable byproduct of dedication, hardwork, consistency, and resilience. These bridges stand as testament to the unknown world—often called magical bridges because unlike conventional bridges made of iron and steel that break down with age, living root bridges grow stronger over time. Their carrying capacity increases as they age, and they create their own uniqueness in formation day by day, leading many to consider them a wonder of the world. The film goes beyond simple documentation. It creates a thoughtful passage between past and present, between ancestral roots and the bridges needed for future generations. Through sensitive and observant cinematography, Stevenson allows the subject to breathe, giving dignity to voices, traditions, and silences that are often overlooked. As one of our judges beautifully expressed: "The film's strength lies in its emotional clarity. Diengdoh's eye feels sensitive and observant; he allows the subject to breathe, giving dignity to voices, traditions and silences that are often overlooked. The camerawork has an observational quality, using landscape, faces and pauses to create a deep sense of cultural memory. Its strength lies in its restraint—the camera does not intrude; it holds in sincerity. Through its visual language and quiet storytelling, 'Roots to Bridges' becomes more than a film about heritage—it becomes a reminder that identity survives when it is shared, protected and carried forward." His film powerfully demonstrates how ancient sustainable practices can inspire responsible tourism while preserving cultural heritage for future generations.
