Hoe zat het met Rusland in de Eerste Wereldoorlog (1914 - 1917)? Rusland vocht in the Triple Entente (samen met Frankrijk en Engeland) tegen de Centralen (Duitsland, Oostenrijk-Hongarije en het Ottomaanse Rijk). De Russen leden vele verliezen, zoals tijdens de Slag om Tannenberg (1914), maar ook successen, zoals tijdens het Broesilov-offensief (1916). Begin 1917 brak de Russische Revolutie uit. De Februarirevolutie (1917) liet de tsaar aftreden. De nieuwe regering zette de oorlog tegen Duitsland voort. In de zomer van 1917 werd het Kerenski-offensief gelanceerd. Dit werd één groot fiasco. Na de Oktoberrevolutie hadden de bolsjewieken de macht gegrepen en de oorlog werd afgesloten met de Vrede van Brest-Litovsk (1918).
