Take a Break with Karen: Lyle Haataja on 30 Years of Logging & The Scandinavian Hour

Pour a fresh cup of coffee and get ready for a nostalgic trip down memory lane with a local icon of southwest Washington! ☕️📻 In this episode of Take a Break with Karen, host Karen Bertram sits down with her neighbor, lifelong resident, and beloved local radio host Lyle Haataja. Well-known across the region, Lyle hosts the iconic Scandinavian Hour on KMUN out of Astoria, spinning the traditional polkas, hymns, and classic love songs that sound like home. In this heartwarming chat, Lyle looks back at a lifetime spent in the woods, on the water, and on the radio waves. Karen and Lyle pull back the curtain on the grit, the music, and the deep pioneer history of the Grays River valley: 30 Years in the Woods & Floating Logging Camps: Lyle shares stories from his three decades as a logger, including his time spent in the remote, beautiful wilderness of the Tongass National Forest in Southeast Alaska. He describes what it was like living on floating logging camps out of Ketchikan and Prince of Wales Island, working long hours, and navigating the rough lifestyle before the days of modern tourism. High Climbing & Old Growth Legends: From his early days high climbing trees to his memories of legendary local characters like Bobby Seirus, Lyle discusses the immense physical toll and methodical strategy behind bringing down massive timber. He and Karen also share hair-raising stories of survival from the woods, like Billy Warning’s famous upside-down fall. Preserving The Scandinavian Hour & Rare Finnish Records: Lyle recounts how he kept the radio program alive and built his massive music collection. He shares the incredible story of inheriting boxes of vintage Swedish and Norwegian records from the estate of Portland's long-time host Robert Anderson, and hitting the jackpot at a local estate sale that uncovered an archive of 99% authentic Finnish records and cassettes. Grays River History & Lost Gathering Places: Take a walk down a forgotten storefront row as Lyle maps out Grays River as it used to be. He brings back memories of the old Grays River Cafe, the Valley Tavern, Appelo’s store, the locker plant, Siobhan Packman’s blacksmith shop, and the legendary Missouri Store—complete with its pilings in the river and a rumored one-lane bowling alley upstairs. Community, Immigrant Grit & The Deep River Church: Lyle and Karen reflect on the tight-knit culture of early Finnish immigrants who carved out a life from the land. Lyle highlights the history of the Deep River and Naselle churches, sharing a humorous family story about his dad’s uncle finding a very specific spot in the Seal River church floorboards. Living Through History (Vietnam & JFK): A veteran who served as a sub sailor on the East Coast during the Vietnam War era, Lyle talks honestly about the somber realities of the draft and losing high school classmates. He and Karen also look back on the devastating, historic days following the assassination of John F. Kennedy and the strength of Jackie Kennedy. Complete with neighborly banter about repairing mailboxes under protest and memories of old friends like Donna and George Clint, this episode captures the true, enduring spirit of our local community.
