Inside the Shoalwater Bay Museum: Mark Visits Tokeland, WA and Experiences Indigenous History & Art

Join us for an educational tour as we visit the cultural heart of the Shoalwater Bay Indian Tribe in Tokeland, Washington. 🌊🛶 In this episode, host Mark Justice visits with Earl at the Shoalwater Bay Heritage Museum and Cultural Center. Earl shares the true history behind the Shoalwater designation, explaining how the tribe represents the proud descendants of the Lower Chehalis and Lower Chinook peoples brought together by historical government decree. From linguistic traditions to precious family heirlooms, this tour offers a rare look at the preservation of Pacific Northwest tribal history: 🎨 The Language of the Mural: Earl translates the beautiful Lower Chehalis Salish language painted on the museum's entry mural, sharing a traditional greeting of gratitude and welcome: “We are happy to have your presence. We are thankful for your presence.” 🐚 Archaeology of the Shell Midden: Step inside an active preservation exhibit featuring artifacts recovered just miles up the road. Earl explains what a traditional "shell midden" teaches us about ancestral diets, showcasing preserved elk, cougar, Canadian geese, and mountain beaver bones—plus an incredibly tiny, perfectly intact shrew skull. 🖌️ The Resilient Art of Eugene Landry: Discover the stunning portrait gallery of tribal member Eugene Landry. Passing away in the 1980s, Landry left behind a legacy of striking portraits of community elders—some of which he painted using his teeth after a paralyzing life event. 📚 An Updated Tribal Library: Tour the collection partnered with Timberland Regional Libraries, which has been intentionally overhauled to highlight regional Indigenous voices, featuring prominent scholars like Vine Deloria Jr., acclaimed authors like Sherman Alexie, and a unique collection of Native-authored graphic novels. 🧺 Woven Heirlooms & The Flagship Canoe: View a beautiful basketry collection stretching from the late 1800s to the 1980s, including a deeply personal cradle basket woven by Earl's grandmother. Finally, stand alongside the museum's pride and joy—a 28-foot traditional "bay style" canoe carved roughly 150 years ago around the time the reservation was formed. Before heading out, Mark stops by the museum's gift shop, which proudly displays and supports authentic, contemporary art handmade by local tribal members. 📍 Plan Your Visit & Connect Online Official Website: Learn more about the community's history, current cultural preservation events, and tribal services by visiting the official government portal at www.shoalwaterbay-nsn.gov.
