Military authorities have launched a search after a crew member of a naval vessel went missing while on patrol duty in waters near the Northern Limit Line (NLL) in the East Sea. The Navy stated, "One crew member of a naval vessel performing patrol duties went missing this morning (the 12th) in waters approximately 50 kilometers east of Geojin-eup, Goseong-gun, in the East Sea." The missing soldier is identified as a Private First Class aboard a frigate. The soldier was last seen in an indoor passageway of the ship by a duty officer on internal patrol between midnight and 2:00 AM today. It is reported that the soldier's disappearance became known after he failed to show up for his 8:00 AM shift. The Navy is conducting a joint search with the Coast Guard, deploying approximately 10 vessels and several aircraft. It is understood that the fact of the disappearance was also reported to North Korea via the International Merchant Marine Network, which is capable of receiving communications from North Korea. Upon receiving a report regarding the missing persons incident, Minister of National Defense Ahn Kyu-baek instructed that every effort be made to rescue the missing persons as quickly and safely as possible.
