The peasant, in the early Middle Ages, was a bit like an average man, because at that time, more than 90% of the population lived in the countryside! ✋ A Max of History Documentaries 👉 https://bit.ly/47AiPAI 🙏 Subscribe! Historians have long portrayed the image of populations weakened by successive waves of barbarian migrations, living in unstable settlements within impoverished countryside. But archaeologists have completely changed this image. In the 1990s, archaeological excavations were carried out on areas of several hectares, supplemented by paleo-environmental studies. They revealed a peasant far more knowledgeable than previously thought. He was even an agronomist ahead of his time! He didn't live in small, dilapidated wooden huts but in spacious and comfortable farms. No more stone, the Romans' main building material, but houses made of earth, wood, and thatch. These are natural resources available to this farmer, which offer excellent strength and insulation. No intensive farming as in Roman times. This farmer uses his knowledge to practice sustainable agriculture. He adapts his farming practices to the natural environment he cultivates: he develops the use of tools better suited to the land he cultivates, he preserves his soil, and seeks a balance between agriculture and livestock.
