Yet, initially, these warriors were a "barbarian" people, which in Ancient Greek means "foreign," whose language was unknown. Germanic tribes, they distinguished themselves by their weapons and their exceptional warrior skills. These mercenaries, among other things, sold their services to the Roman Empire. When the Empire began to falter, they chose to go it alone and conquer Gaul! It was Clovis, the first Christian king of the Franks, who launched this conquest of territories at the end of the 5th century. The Frankish king did not have a standing army, which he could not afford to maintain, but rather a small "professional" army whose ranks he swelled for military campaigns by conscripting every free man of fighting age (15 years old). Upon his death in 511, his sons and grandsons continued his policy of expansion, and the Frankish Kingdom reached its greatest extent by the mid-6th century.
