Anfiteatro di Volterra 2022: le ultime scoperte archeologiche tra sotterranei e rare monete

The latest archaeological discoveries at the Volterra Amphitheater have focused primarily on excavating the first section of the underground tunnel, descending to within nine meters of ground level. Future excavations will continue toward other areas already identified, both toward the center of the arena and toward the hill. Some artifacts, including a rare and valuable Etruscan aes grave, have emerged from the material carried by floodwaters into the tunnel. Here's the full article on ArcheoReporter https://www.archaeoreporter.com/2022/... Elena Sorge, the official from the Superintendency of Pisa and Livorno who has been directing the excavation from the first blow of the pickaxe (or rather, the bucket, given the thousands of cubic meters of earth to be removed), sees this as an interim period, with a wealth of data in hand, to prepare for what will be a very long next season, destined to conclude only when the monument is fully exposed. In the meantime, the scientific front (with many multidisciplinary teams at work, starting with those from the Institute of Cultural Heritage Sciences of the CNR) and the technical front are fully operational. For example, and no small feat, the municipality of Volterra will have to divert a portion of the city sewer, which fate has—somewhat prosaically—intended to pass right under the steps of the amphitheater itself.
