Erster Rennstart, erster Ausflug, erster Sieg: Rainer Braun am Nürburgring | #4

In episode 4 of our series on "100 Years of the Nürburgring," Rainer Braun recounts his first race at the Nürburgring—and how his dream of driving there himself became a reality. The year is 1965: Through his contacts at Porsche and Huschke von Hanstein, Rainer Braun enters Formula Vee. After his first outing at the Norisring, he gets the chance to compete in the Eifel Cup race at the Nürburgring. However, not on the Nordschleife, as he initially thought, but on the Südschleife. The race begins in the rain. Rainer starts in the third row, ahead of him, among others, the future Le Mans winner Gijs van Lennep, as well as greats like Rolf Stommelen. But the race ends for Rainer, at least initially, off the track: On the downhill stretch to Müllenbach, he misses the road, and shortly afterward, Stommelen also ends up near him. While Stommelen is able to continue, Rainer's race is over—but at least Rolf Stommelen gives him a piggyback ride back to the start/finish line on the cool-down lap. Two years later comes his first start on the Nordschleife: in 1967, the 300-kilometer Formula V race. After extensive training with professionals like Gerhard Mitter, Herbert Linge, and Udo Schütz, Rainer Braun achieves victory right away—albeit with a minor scare on the final lap when he goes a bit too far sideways for the sake of the spectators and almost loses everything in the Hatzenbach section. This episode is about ambition, respect, mentors, the Südschleife, the Nordschleife, Formula V—and about the moment Rainer Braun secured his first victory at the Nürburgring.
