*Story 4: What the Dark Hides — Summary* In the year 2849, eleven-year-old Kael Raven begins his third year at the Academy when the Velhari Navigation Authority orders a live survey of the Drevani corridor—the gravitational route Kael previously proved had been wrongly classified as impassable. The Authority specifically requests Kael as navigator, making it clear that the mission has been arranged for reasons extending far beyond ordinary research. The crew of the scout vessel Varath includes Instructor Varell, combat instructor Thresh, veteran pilot Jask Vellan, Kael’s closest friend Doss and Senior Navigator Orath, the man responsible for the corridor’s original classification. Kael immediately suspects that Orath’s presence is deliberate. Jask’s history also raises questions: he once served in the same fleet unit commanded by Mira’s father, who died in a Drevani border engagement that may be connected to the corridor’s secret past. Before departure, Kael prepares relentlessly. He runs repeated simulations and secretly develops his unusual ability known as the reaching. By touching a mechanical system, he can extend his awareness through it, sensing power, data and active machinery far beyond normal perception. He plans to use this gift through the Varath itself. Doss also reveals that he has concealed extraordinary zero-gravity skills learned while growing up on his family’s merchant station. The temporary deception became permanent, and Orath remained silent for eleven years to protect his career and reputation. He realises that the entire mission was designed to expose the suppression and force him to confess. He agrees to submit a complete report and resign from the Academy. During the return journey, an unidentified military vessel emerges inside the corridor. Rather than attacking directly, it transmits a signal that cripples the *Varath*’s engines, threatening to trap the crew for eighteen hours. Kael understands that the vessel knows the corridor’s schedule and does not want the team returning with Orath’s evidence. Using the reaching, Kael discovers that the fourth gravitational body is moving into position to create a brief secondary assist route. The ninety-second window is large enough for the smaller *Varath*, but not for the pursuing military ship. Kael manually guides the crew through the new route, using the fourth body’s gravity to escape while forcing the enemy vessel away from them. Back at the Academy, Kael files the full corridor survey immediately, permanently proving the route’s viability. Orath submits a fourteen-page confession, names Corvel and resigns.
