Prehistoric Monuments You've Probably Never Heard Of

In beautiful late winter sun we set off to look at two fantastic Neolithic chambered burial tombs in Dumfries and Galloway, southwest Scotland. Cairnholy 1 and Cairnholy 2 are fine examples of such tombs - sometimes referred as "gallery graves" as distinct from "passage graves" - and representative of the Clyde type Neolithic burial cairns at the head of the Irish Sea. Excavated in 1949, the finds tell us a story about a society connected with others across the sea. Trading goods and ideas. We also meet up with Joseph - sometimes known as the druid of Cairnholy - a fascinating chap who has been studying the alignments here for 18 years.
