Las Unidades ESPECIALES de las legiones romanas: Los Exploratores y Speculatores

The legions needed units to scout the terrain they would be crossing, and this task fell to the exploratores and the procuratores. These soldiers would be an essential part of the campaigns. The exploratores were the scouts of the Roman legions. Their job was to find the enemy army, search for battlefields favorable to the Roman army, river crossing points, and forests where they could be ambushed. They gave all the information to the general, who was responsible for developing the strategy for the military campaign. But the procuratores also supported the legionaries as scouts, only they stayed a maximum of 5 km away from the main body of the army. They looked for enemy scouts and any kind of immediate threat that could endanger the legion. These men were part of Roman military intelligence, the troops who analyzed the terrain and looked for the best points from which to attack the enemy.
