Se analizaba la salud y los antecedentes penales del candidato a soldado del imperio romano. Si todo iba bien, el ciudadano comenzaba su adiestramiento para servir en las legiones. Primero se realizaban largas marchas para endurecer el cuerpo del legionario y convertirlo en músculo, capaz de soportar las duras condiciones de las campañas militares que la república romana o el imperio romano realizase más allá de sus fronteras. A continuación el recluta romano comenzaba el adiestramiento con las armas. Debía aprender a seguir las órdenes del centurión y conocer las formaciones romanas que las legiones usaban en batalla. Una vez pasaba todo este entrenamiento romano, el soldado estaba listo para enfrentarse al enemigo en batalla.
