Doctrine as the Grammar of Prayer: Martin Thornton & Hans Urs von Balthasar in Theological Dialogue

In this conference presentation, The Revd Dr Robert Falconer explores the fascinating idea that Christian doctrine functions as a grammar of prayer—the theological framework that forms, guides, and regulates how believers speak to God. Drawing on the ascetical theology of Martin Thornton and the theological anthropology of Hans Urs von Balthasar, this discussion examines the relationship between doctrine, spirituality, contemplation, and Christian devotion. Engaging important theological voices including Wittgenstein, George Lindbeck, Kevin Vanhoozer, and John Frame, the presentation investigates how theology moves beyond abstract concepts and becomes embodied in the lived practice of prayer. Through the lenses of Scripture, ascetical formation, the Eucharist, the Divine Office, and personal prayer, we consider how Christian doctrine provides faithful boundaries for communion with God while remaining deeply practical and transformative. Topics explored include doctrine as grammar, lex orandi and lex credendi, canonical theology, contemplative prayer, ascetical theology, and the relationship between theology and spiritual formation. The discussion highlights how Martin Thornton's vision of "the rock and the river" complements Hans Urs von Balthasar's emphasis on revelation and participation in Christ, offering a rich account of prayer as both theological and existential. This paper was originally presented on 26 June 2026 at the annual conference of the Theological Society of Southern Africa, hosted by the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein. About the Presenter: The Revd Dr Robert Falconer holds degrees in both architecture and theology. He serves as Head of Research and Publishing at the South African Theological Seminary and is a priest in the Anglican Diocese of Port Elizabeth. Robert is also an Associate of the Order of the Holy Cross, an Anglican monastic community in the Benedictine tradition. He lives in Saint Francis Bay, South Africa, with his wife, Catherine, and their sons, Ezekiel and Gabriel. Whether you are a theologian, seminary student, Anglican priest, spiritual director, or someone interested in Christian spirituality, this video offers a fresh perspective on the relationship between doctrine and prayer in the Christian life. #ChristianSpirituality #MartinThornton #HansUrsVonBalthasar #AsceticalTheology
