Historias Innecesarias: Atentados Madrid 2004 - 11M
DIARY OF COLLAPSE now available for Channel Members!: / @historias.innecesarias Outside of Argentina: www.patreon.com/damiankuc Madrid, Thursday, March 11, 2004. It's 7:30 in the morning, and the city is bustling as usual. Four commuter trains travel the tracks connecting the working-class neighborhoods of the east and south with the city center. These are the trains for the early risers: construction workers, cleaners, university students, vendors opening their businesses early, and immigrants crammed into the trains on their way to work. Three days remain until the general election, the polls predict a victory for the People's Party, and Spaniards are preparing for a long weekend. Madrid, Thursday, March 11, 2004. But at 7:37 a.m., three bombs hidden in backpacks exploded on a train that had just arrived at Atocha station. A minute later, two more detonated on another train entering El Pozo del Tío Raimundo station, a working-class neighborhood southeast of Madrid. And almost simultaneously, another exploded on a third train stopping at Santa Eugenia. At 7:39 a.m., four bombs detonated on a fourth train on a street about 500 meters from Atocha. The country was quickly paralyzed by the news: ten bombs had exploded on four different trains in a span of just four minutes. But three of them failed to detonate. And one of those, already defused and taken to a police station, would become a key piece of evidence in the entire investigation. In those four minutes, 192 people of 17 different nationalities died and almost 2,000 were injured in the worst terrorist attack in Spanish history. And in just the next 72 hours, the government would lie about the perpetrators, society would rise up with a text message, and Spain would change presidents.
