On Thursday, March 11, 2004, between 7:36 and 7:40 a.m., ten bombs exploded on four commuter trains in Madrid. A jihadist cell had just carried out the largest terrorist attack in Spanish history. 193 people were killed and around 2,000 were injured. Simultaneously, a media and communications smear campaign was underway. The date, coinciding with the March 14th general election, facilitated the worst tactics employed by José María Aznar's People's Party. The then Prime Minister lied to the public, attributing the attack to the terrorist organization ETA. That strategy was only the beginning of a conspiracy frenzy fabricated by right-wing and far-right media outlets.
