Shopify ADA Compliance: How Remediation Works (Fix Website Accessibility Issues Strategically)
ADA Website consultant Kris Rivenburgh covers the remediation phase of a Shopify accessibility project, breaking down the process of fixing issues identified in an audit report. Remediation splits into two categories: code and content. Code remediation involves the advanced technical aspects of accessibility, while content remediation addresses images, video, audio, text, and potentially documents. A strategic approach to remediation matters. Rather than fixing issues in random order, store owners can prioritize based on risk. The Accessibility Tracker platform includes a risk factor formula that allows teams to filter and sort issues by the level of risk they pose. For example, an audit report with 100 issues can be sorted so the most critical items are addressed first, lowering legal exposure as work progresses. Accessibility Tracker also features AI tools that guide teams through fixes tailored to the specific issues found on their Shopify store. The AI works directly from the data extracted in the audit report, walking teams through analysis of the current implementation, detailed step-by-step technical recommendations, and working code. Five AI tools are available, including an option for custom prompts. This is particularly helpful for developers, designers, and content editors who are newer to accessibility and need more context or an alternative approach to what the audit report recommends. The AI-guided remediation also reduces costs downstream. When teams fix issues correctly the first time, fewer rounds of validation are needed. A good cost estimate for code remediation is three to three and a half times the cost of the audit. Code remediation is complex and time-intensive. Content remediation is simpler but can also demand significant time, especially for stores with hundreds of unique images that all need proper alt text descriptions. AI tools like ChatGPT can help accelerate content remediation as well. The core takeaway is that the audit only identifies the issues. Remediation is where the actual fixes happen, and approaching it strategically with the right tools makes the process faster, more accurate, and less expensive.
