Shopify ADA Compliance: Website Accessibility Lawsuits (Gain Confidence as a Store Owner) - Part 1

ADA Website Compliance expert Kris Rivenburgh covers why Shopify store owners are being relentlessly targeted in serial website accessibility litigation and what that means for anyone running an e-commerce store on the platform. The video opens with a real Instagram post from a Shopify store owner detailing a $50,000 demand letter over ADA non-compliance, making it clear this is not hypothetical. This is happening to small businesses right now. From there, actual excerpts from a complaint filed in court in 2026 walk through the exact language plaintiffs' lawyers use when suing over website accessibility barriers, including claims of denied access for blind and visually impaired users. Most Shopify clients that come to Accessible.org have already received a demand letter or had a complaint filed against them. Many small business owners had no idea they could even be sued over their website. The ideal approach is to address accessibility before litigation forces the issue, but for those who have already been sued, the goal is to make it a one-and-done situation, because repeat lawsuits from different plaintiffs are common, especially for businesses that fail to properly remediate. One important distinction covered here is that Shopify itself is not the problem. There is nothing inherently wrong with the platform. The lawsuits stem from how stores are customized and the accessibility issues that result from themes, content, and third-party integrations. Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act covers places of public accommodation, and courts generally interpret e-commerce stores to fall under that umbrella. The best practice for ADA compliance is WCAG 2.1 AA or 2.2 AA conformance. While 2.1 AA provides an excellent level of accessibility, some plaintiffs' law firms are now referencing 2.2 in their complaints. The difference between the two is only 6 additional technical requirements, but either standard positions a store owner to significantly reduce their litigation risk. This is the first video in a series that walks through the full process of making a Shopify store WCAG conformant, from audits and remediation through validation and ongoing maintenance.
