Most people are quite unsure about when they need to register a business, what it means to be a freelancer, and when they have to pay trade tax. In this video, I'll explain when you need to register your photography or videography business and what you need to pay attention to. For commercial photographers, the Chambers of Industry and Commerce (IHK) and Skilled Crafts (HWK) are responsible. Photographers usually end up in the HWK, but are exempt from membership fees up to a certain profit threshold. This is currently €5,200. Furthermore, new business owners are exempt from chamber fees for the first year. For the second and third years, they only have to pay half the basic fee. Insurance as a freelancer. The Artists' Social Security Fund (KSK) is the statutory social insurance for freelancers. Freelance photographers include, for example, journalists or photographic artists who do not do commissioned photography. Wedding photography, portraits, and other client commissions (no matter how creative or artistic they may be) are therefore, by definition, still considered commercial photography – meaning the German Social Security Fund for Artists (KSK) is not responsible for commercial photographers.
